His colleague Rita Miliūtė has informed that Sakadolskis passed away in a New York hospital in early hours of Thursday.
Sakadolskis was born in 1947 in Germany, but later emigrated to the United States. He graduated from the University of Maryland and worked for Voice of America for over three decades since 1969.
Sakadolskis returned Lithuania after it regained independence from the Soviet Union and over the last decade was a lecturer at Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas.
Romas Sakadolskis was one of the most outstanding journalists in Lithuania's history and a man dedicated to the ideals of freedom and democracy, says philosopher Leonidas Donskis.
"Sakadolskis is an extremely bright and large page in the history of journalism and free speech of Lithuania," Donskis told BNS on Thursday.
"The younger generation may not remember the fact that Sakadolskis was the Lithuanian voice on the Voice of America. Just like Mykolas Drunga was the Lithuanian voice of Radio Free Europe in Munich and later in Prague, Sakadolskis was the Lithuanian voice of the Voice of America in Washington, and his remarkably beautiful Lithuanian language, superb articulation would reach (Lithuania) even at the times when the Soviets impeded the reception of the Voice of America, still nearly all of Lithuania heard it," said the philosopher.
