Lithuania is finishing the reconstruction of a stretch of the Via Baltica highway - as part of the European route E67 from Prague to Helsinki is known - near Kaunas. However, there are no funds to upgrade the part of the highway running to the Polish border, officials say.

The upgrade in Kaunas district will cost €38.5 million and involves widening the road and changing the pavement. The works are expected to be completed in September.

The project also involves constructing four bridges, including a 112-metre railway bridge.

Egidijus Skrodenis, head of Lithuania's Roads Authority, says the next step would be upgrading a 10km stretch of Via Baltica in Kazlų Rūda and near Prienai in south-western Lithuania. The government still needs to come up with funding for the latter two projects, as well as for the upgrade leading to the Polish border.

Poland has said it will build a highway leading to the Lithuanian border within four years.
