General Raymond Thomas, commander of the United States Special Operations Command, is visiting Lithuania on Friday to meet with Parliamentary Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis and observe an exercise in Pabrade, central Lithuania.

"The meeting with the Seimas speaker will address relevant security and defense issues, strategic partnership between US and Lithuanian special forces," Dalia Venceviciene, spokeswoman for the parliamentary speaker, told BNS on the eve of the visit.

After the visit, Thomas will be escorted to Pabrade to observe an international exercise Lightning Sword of the Special Operations Forces. US troops are also taking part in the training.

Deployment of US special operators in the Baltic Sea region was confirmed by Lithuanian officials early in 2017.
