MP Gintaras Steponavičius of the Lithuanian Liberal Movement has dismissed the suspicions expressed by prosecutors as "disgraceful," adding he had discussed overall political situation, not specific votes with Raimondas Kurlianskis of MG Baltic concern.

"I categorically disagree with the position formulated by prosecutors. I have not committed any deeds that I understand could run counter to the laws. And I will prove this," Steponavičius told journalists on Tuesday after Prosecutor general Evaldas Pašilis asked the parliament to lift his legal immunity to be able to bring him to justice.

Steponavičius said that the meetings with Kurlianskis focused on the country's general situation and upcoming elections, however, did not address any specific votes in the parliament.

"Not a word was said about any laws of their concern. And the interesting part of the story is that prosecutors step on the Seimas rostrum to say and give a context about my meetings having any tangible causal connection, excuse me. All this is pure fiction. And this, in my understanding, is a disgraceful episode," said Steponavičius.

The Liberal Movement MP admitted he had discussed Kurlianskis' financial support to his election campaign, however, has not received any support from his as a legal entity, as the sums had been transferred from MG Baltic corporate account to the public establishment and the support fund.

In his address to the parliament on Steponavičius' legal immunity, Pašilis stated earlier on Tuesday that the MP had met with Kurlianskis to discuss illegal financing for his party and voted in favor of legislation benefiting the business group's interests, thus undermining the authority of the Seimas and disgracing the name of a lawmaker.
