"After the Social Democratic Party's decision, we are entering a phase of political instability," Grybauskaitė said in comment of the party's move on Saturday.

In her words, the Saulius Skvernelis-led government will have to operate in minority.

"The minority government is likely to have support of informal, diverse and rather unstable majority. We are faced with a major test of responsibility – not only for those who remain in power but also for the opposition," Grybauskaite said in a message provided to BNS by her press service.

Earlier on Saturday, the Social Democratic Party's council had decided to leave the ruling coalition with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LFGU).

LFGU has 56 seats in Lithuania's 141-seat parliament, while the Social Democrats have 17. The opposition Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (conservatives) have 31 mandates, the Liberal Movement group has 14, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families have eight, the Order and Justice group has seven MPs. Another five parliamentarians are not affiliated with any political group.
