An amount of explosive material is missing from the Lithuanian Armed Forces' Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion, but law-enforcement officials do not rule out that the shortfall, which was discovered last week, might be due to an accounting error.

Elena Martinonienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, told BNS on Monday that "a possible shortfall of explosive material" had been found at the Kaunas-based military unit last Thursday.

The spokeswoman gave no details as to the quantity of explosives missing from the battalion.

"Officials treat this as a top danger, but there is a possibility that it was an accounting error," she said.

The military said last Friday that a pre-trial investigation had been launched regarding a shortfall of "military assets", but provided no details.

Captain Pavelas Lukjanovas, a military police public relations officer, said that the investigation had been started under Article 324 of the Criminal Code.

The article reads that "a serviceman who, through negligence, loses a weapon, ammunition, explosives, explosive materials, a vehicle or another military equipment entrusted to him for the purposes of service shall be punished by arrest or by a custodial sentence for a term of up to three years".
