Lithuania's Parliamentary Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis believes that the Seimas will manage to reduce the number of its members.

"I think that votes for very important issues secured 94 votes, we are likely to have enough this time, as the majority of three parties declared this even before the elections that the Seimas should be made smaller," Pranckietis told Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

The speaker said he would support the proposal, which was the commitment of the Peasant and Green Union before the October general elections.

"We see that the Seimas includes the number of inactive people that the institution could be reduced by," said Pranckietis delegated to the post by LPGU.

PGU leader Ramunas Karbauskis and a few dozen MPs believe the Seimas should be reduced in the wake of the decline in population numbers.

When Lithuania's Constitution was adopted in 1992, Lithuania's population was 3.7 million people, while the country's current population has dropped to 2.85 million.

Some political scientists maintain that reduction of the MP number may driver parliamentarians away from their electorate, adding that the 141 MPs is a proportional representation of the country's size.
