Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, welcomes Agriculture Minister Bronius Markauskas' decision to step down and expects that it will not take long for the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS) to find a replacement.

"I regard this as a step by a serious person. He reached a limit where he made his decision, which was the right thing to do. I think he can only be commended for his determination," he told reporters on Wednesday.

Pranckietis admitted, however, that Markauskas' resignation was somewhat belated.

The speaker expects that LVŽS will shortly find a new agriculture minister to replace Markauskas, who is a member of the ruling party.

Markauskas says that he is stepping down due to family concerns and criticism from President Dalia Grybauskaitė.
