Lithuania's Parliamentary Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis on Thursday urged Mindaugas Bastys, a member of the ruling Social Democratic Party, to step down from the post of parliamentary vice-speaker.

Pranckietis' call came after he studied the materials about the MP submitted by the State Security Department.

"In light of the information received from the State Security Department, I call upon the Seimas member to step down from the Seimas leadership. The information affects the Seimas' performance and image. Further decisions on Bastys will have to be made by the Social Democratic Party's group. We must ensure stable operations of the Seimas and the ruling coalition that would be based on trust of the people of Lithuania," he said in a press release.
