The amendments open the way for setting up a centralized procurement agency that will be named the Defense Resource Agency and is expected to launch operations next year.

The Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be in charge of procurement planning. It will be renamed the Defense Staff and will receive more strategic planning powers.

Officials expect that the Defense Resource Agency will conduct 75 percent of all of the defense system's purchases starting next year and for 95 percent in another year's time.

The Defense Ministry will have to inform the parliament's Committee on National Security and Defense about any planned purchase worth over 20 million euros.
