The Lithuanian State Security Department (SSD) is monitoring the attempts to spread panic over COVID-19 and sees an increase in activity on the part of Russia aimed at misinforming the public, Darius Jauniskis, chief of the intelligence agency, said on Monday.

“We see a pickup in information operations, a certain input from Russia’s intelligence services and their activity in cyberspace aimed at misinforming our public, spreading certain panic and distrust in the EuroAtlantic area and public authorities,” he told the parliamentary National Security and Defense Committee.

The SSD observed “the dissemination of misinformation of non-Lithuanian origin”, Jauniskis said adding, however, that the intelligence agency also noticed “various domestic manifestations … aimed at creating havoc in the minds of our citizens or spreading certain misinformation”.

The SSD chief emphasized the need to monitor the moods inside the country so as “not to miss that breaking point where a longer-term lockdown or certain measures may trigger certain discontent”.
