Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Thursday called on Interior Minister Eimutis Misiūnas to be more active in addressing the challenges of growing immigration and pay less attention to finding someone to blame or replacing officials.

"It is the minister who is ultimately responsible for migration policies and (it is wrong) to look for someone to blame and push one another and to think that issues can be solved by sacking one (official) and reprimanding another," she told reporters.

Misiūnas has repeatedly criticized Evelina Gudzinskaitė, the director of the Lithuanian Migration Department, for her work, but she refuses to step down.

The Migration Department has come under criticism for its failure to cope with growing numbers of immigrants, especially from Ukraine.
