Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said on Thursday that the country’s political leaders have a duty to act to prevent embezzlement of public funds after receiving information from law-enforcement bodies, but did not disclose how many ministers might not receive her approval after her inauguration for a second term of office.

Grybauskaitė was commenting on the situation after suspicions have been voiced about certain deputy ministers.

“Under the Law on Criminal Intelligence, which came into force in 2013, (…) when suspicions or shadows [of doubt] emerge, the secret or law-enforcement agencies have to inform the leaders of the state, who must take this information into account and perform their political duty of preventing the state’s funds from being stolen,” she told reporters in Vilnius.

Grybauskaitė said that all information contained in classified documents is known to Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and that it is his duty to ensure transparency.

The president would not say how many ministers she might refuse to approve after the current government returns its powers to the president following her inauguration on Jul. 12.

“I’d rather not speak about that today,” she said.
