Partial vote counts showed that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte had defeated his far-right rival Geert Wilders.

Following last year's Brexit vote in the UK and the election of Donald Trump as US president, the Dutch election was closely watched amid fears of a rising wave of populism in Europe, especially as the presidential election in France and the parliamentary election in Germany approach.
