In talks on Britain's exit from the European Union, the Lithuanian government will demand assurances that Lithuanians living in the UK will not be discriminated against, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on Tuesday ahead of a meeting with Britain's Brexit secretary.

"There can't be any discrimination based on where they come from -- from the West or Eastern Europe. The social guarantees package must be maintained. This is the key message we will communicate regarding the protection of the interests of our citizens in the UK after Brexit," he said on LRT Radio.

Skvernelis later in the day is to meet with David Davis, the UK's Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, who is coming to Vilnius after visits to Estonia and Latvia.

The Times reported on the eve of Davis' visits that the British government was considering diverting billions of pounds of foreign aid from Asia and Africa to the Baltic nations and other Central and Eastern European countries in an effort to get a better Brexit deal.

Formal Brexit talks are expected to begin in late March and be completed within two years.

In a referendum held last June, some 52 percent of British voters opted to leave the EU.
