Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said on Tuesday political parties are acting "not nice and irresponsibly" by trying to play defense needs off against social needs.

Her comments come in response to the country's Social Democrats' refusal to back a increase in defense spending, instead calling for spending more money on social needs.

Grynbauskaitė also believes political parties' goal to reach 2.5 percent GDP defense spending by 2030 is "a really reasonable period".

"It's a really reasonable period which should not be set against other needs of the state, and those parties that are trying to play defense off against social needs are active not very nice and irresponsibly," the president told journalists in Vilnius on Tuesday.
