The committee's proposal came after discussion of the 2015 budget draft and in response to a relevant request from the Ministry of National Defence.

The ministry said the allocations envisaged in the 2015 budget do not answer the needs of the necessary funding, adding that the proposed budget will mean shortage of money for outfits and food for additional 450 soldiers, as well as for munitions and equipment.

As compared with this year, the 2015 defence budget is increased by a third to 1.466 billion litas or 1.11 percent of the projected gross domestic product (GDP). Lithuania plans to reach the 2 percent level required by NATO by 2020.

The parliament plans to adopt the 2015 budget in early December.
