The largest opposition groups of the Lithuanian parliament have dismissed the parliamentary vote, which failed to strip MP Mindaugas Bastys of his mandate amid impeachment, as an slap on the face for the State Security Department and the Constitutional Court.

"I am thinking beyond Bastys, I am thinking about the State Security Department's relation with the Seimas and the Seimas' slap on the face for the Constitutional Court. I believe these are very important institutions of Lithuania and the Seimas does not care. This is not just a question about Bastys," Eugenijus Gentvilas, the leader of the opposition Liberal Movement, said on Tuesday in comment of the vote.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lithuania's parliament Tuesday came 13 votes short of revoking the mandate for gross violation of the Constitution and his oath of office. In a secret ballot, 72 parliamentarians voted in support of stripping the MP of the mandate, while 21 were against and 24 abstained.

Rasa Juknevičienė, conservative member of the parliamentary National Security and Defence Committee, said the results indicated that part of the Seimas had been captured.

"We can think that this is merely an attempt to keep the majority and have a person of extreme loyalty, a person who has been affected and a bit damaged, but on the other hand, looking at what we at the National Security and Defence Committee found during the inquiry – I see this as capturing of part of the parliament," said Juknevičienė.
