Swedish-produced electricity transported via the NordBalt cable underneath the Baltic Sea is back on the wholesale market on Friday, following the latest interruption on April 21.

Operators of the interconnection between Sweden and Lithuania are capping the cable's capacity at 500 MW in order to prevent further malfunctioning.

"The only way to catch all the flaws of the cable is to use it and monitor all malfunctions, analysing their causes," says Daivis Virbickas, director of Lithuania's electricity grid operator Litgrid.

He says the cable's capacity will be capped at 500 MW to make sure that temperature fluctuations are not the cause of recent malfunctions.

Since February 17, when electricity from NordBalt was put on the market, wholesale electricity prices in Lithuania dropped 13%, from €34.2 to €29.6 per MWh.
