Laimonas Čiakas, currently serving as director of the 1 st Audit Department of the National Audit Office, has been picked as the new chief of the Lithuanian National Land Service after winning a competition. Čiakas, 47, will be confirmed to the post after a credibility check by the law-enforcement.

"If there are no additional obstacles, the new head of the National Land Service should take office in December," Remigijus Bielinskas, adviser to Lithuania's agriculture minister, told BNS.

Čiakas who has degrees in economy and management has served as adviser at the parliamentary European Affairs Committee and the Agriculture Ministry.

Danielius Kuprys was sacked from the top position at the National Land Service in August amid conflict of interests.
