NATO air policing fighter jets protecting the Baltic skies were scrambled five times last week to intercept aircraft flying in the international airspace over the Baltic states, Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence said on Monday.

On August 13, NATO fighter jets escorted an IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft of the Russian Federation which had not pre-filed a flight plan, was not using its onboard transponder but maintained radio communication air traffic control centres.

On August 14, NATO fighter jets intercepted the same IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying above the Baltic Sea without having pre-filed a flight plan, without using its onboard transponder and not maintaining radio communication with air traffic control centres.

On August 15, NATO air policing fighter aircraft were scrambled three times to intercept the following Russian military aircraft: a Su-24 tactical bomber and three An-26 transport aircraft, all flying according to flight plans submitted in advance, with onboard transponders switched on and maintaining radio communication with air traffic control centres; an An-26 transport aircraft flying in accordance with a pre-filed flight plan, without using onboard transponder but maintaining radio communication, and an An-12 transport aircraft which had not pre-filed a plan for its flight, used its onboard transponder but did not maintain radio communication with air traffic control centres.
