Lukiskes Remand Prison, situated in central Vilnius, will be vacated in early July, six months earlier then planned, Lithuanian Justice Minister Elvinas Jankevicius announced on Tuesday.

"Lukiskes prison will be closed in nearly July. There will be not a single inmate in early July," the minister told journalists in Vilnius.

He also said around 300 inmates are currently kept in Lukiskes, compared to around 700 early this year.

Once vacated, the territory will be opened to city residents, the minister said.

All in all, six building comprises the Lukiskes prison complex in central Vilnius.
