The management of the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theatre refused demands on Monday from the Lithuanian Russian Union to ban am LGBT event, Pride Voices, from taking place in the theatre building.

A petition with 5,000 signatures were added to the request and a similar request has been sent to Lithuania’s LGBT rights organization, the Lithuanian Gay League.

In the request the union said that the theatre, which is at the heart of Russian culture and traditions, should not be used as a venue for LGBT events.

MP Sergei Dmitrijev, a member of Lithuanian Russian Union, has threatened to organise protests if the request is not considered.

Deimantas Šatikas, the deputy head of the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theatre, said that the request will be considered but the theatre's position would not change.

Guests including former Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurðardóttir and her wife, journalist, dramatist and writer Jonina Leósdóttir, European Parliament Vice-President Ulrike Lunacek, Matthew Shepard's parents Judy and Dennis Shepard and LGBT activist Dennis Wamala Mawejje from Uganda will share their experiences at the event.
