Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė says that Jonas Milius should have resigned as director of the State Food and Veterinary Service a long time ago.

"I consider the situation very bad and think that he should have stepped down a long time ago," she told BNS.

The president added that the situation pointed to the need for rotation in public institutions.

"The only conclusion I can draw from what is now surfacing and what details are emerging is that there can be no justification for corruption and nepotism and that (the facts about officials) staying in (their posts in) public institutions for too long, which we have been seeing lately, reconfirm the need for rotation," she said.

Law enforcement officials brought suspicions of abuse of office against Milius two weeks ago. They suspect that Judex, a Kaunas-based frozen food company, sought to influence the State Food and Veterinary Service via MP Petras Gražulis so that it would not impose fines for violations.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius also called on Milius to step down on Wednesday.

Milius, who has headed the institution since 2010, says that he did not overstep the law in helping businesses.
