Kurlianskis is alleged to have paid a bribe of over €100,000 to the former leader of Lithuania’s liberal movement.

One of the senior executives at one of the country's biggest business groups, Kurlianskis was arrested for 20 days under a warrant issued by Vilnius Regional Court which expires tomorrow (Tuesday, May 31).

The court was considering the request from Prosecutor Justas Laucius of the Prosecutor General's Office behind closed doors on Monday. Kurlianskis was detained on May 12 after allegations of bribery, influence peddling and unlawful possession of a state secret.

Lithuanian law-enforcement authorities allege that the MG Baltic vice-president gave a bribe of €106,000 to MP Eligijus Masiulis, who was then leader of the parliamentary opposition party the Liberal Movement.

As part of the same investigation, the Lithuanian anti-fraud police carried out searches at the office and home of Vytautas Gapsys this morning. Gapsys is vice-chairman of the Lithuanian Labour Party and a member of Lithuania's ruling coalition.

Kurlianskis is chairman of the management board at the Laisvas ir Nepriklausomas Kanalas Group, which operates several TV channels, and Alfa Media, the operator of the Alfa.lt news portal.
