Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė sees Brussels' proposal to Moscow to hold talks on lifting the existing food embargo with individual EU countries as a "deplorable precedent" and believes that Lithuania's representative, European Commissioner for Heath and Food Safety Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, must take responsibility for that, a presidential adviser said on Tuesday.

According to Virginija Būdienė, the published letter of an EU officer to his Russian counterpart shows that "attempts are being made to propose to Russia to hold talks with individual EU member states on lifting the existing food embargo".

"The president evaluates such a discriminatory decision by the European Commission negatively and sees it as an attempt to divide the EU, to divide the EU's unity. It's a deplorable precedent that amounts to some sort of provocation," Būdienė told the Žinių Radijas radio on Tuesday morning.

"The start of work by our commissioner is deplorable," she added, hoping that the mistake would be corrected.
