"The invitation was received. The president does not intend to take part in the event," presidential spokesman Modestas Naudžius told BNS on Tuesday.

To mark the triumph in World War Two, Russia holds a military parade in the Red Square in Moscow every year.

Presidents of Lithuania did not attend the anniversary events five or ten years ago, although leaders of other Baltic states accepted the invitations.

The end of the World War II is viewed controversially in the Baltic states, as the end of the war left Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia occupied by the Soviet Union for another five decades.

This year, Russia sent out the invitations amid the tense relations with the Western world, which has condemned the annexation of Crimea and Russian support to separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
