Grybauskaitė suggests that the parliament should adopt relevant amendments to the Bill on Martial Law, which, in her words, would enhance the country's defence capacities.

"The geopolitical situation in Europe has changed, therefore, we should be ready to fight for our state. If necessary, all officers should work in a cohesive manner to ensure safety and defence of the people of Lithuania," the president said in a press release.

In her words, listing of professional and well-trained officers as part of Lithuania's Armed Forces would not only increase the military numbers but also ensure a high level of readiness.

According to the proposed amendments, if the martial law is introduced, officers and specialists of the State Border Guard Service, the Public Security Service and the VIP Protection Department would become subordinate to the chief of defence and would ensure continued operations in as far as required during martial law.

According to information provided by the president's senior adviser Valdemaras Sarapinas, officers of the Public Security Service and the VIP Protection Department would increase the headcount of the Armed Forces by about 5,000 people.
