"The serious historical challenges that Lithuania and Poland faced revealed the true value of freedom and democracy. Therefore, today we cannot stand indifferent when threats are once again leveled against sovereign nations and their right to decide their own future and when we see direct danger to human dignity and freedoms in our immediate neighborhood," the president wrote in her message of congratulations to her Polish counterpart, Bronislaw Komorowski.

Parliamentary Speaker Loreta Graužinienė also congratulated the neighboring nation on the occasion. In letters to Polish Sejm Speaker Radoslaw Sikorski and Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz, she said that the 1791 document was the first example of Europe's unification.

"By celebrating the May 3rd Constitution, we have to retain our solidarity and unity in the defense of our freedom and European values, striving for our shared goals and developing bilateral relations and cooperation. By being loyal to the ides of the Constitution, we have to bravely build a safe future for united Europe," said Graužinienė.
