In a statement issued by the presidential press office, Grybauskaitė thanked Higgins for his visit to Lithuania earlier this year, saying that it confirmed that Ireland "is a close and good friend of Lithuania".

"Lithuania supports Ireland on important matters of the European agenda and shared a common stance on most Continental and security challenges," the Lithuanian president underlined.

Higgins, 77, was re-elected for a second term with 56 percent of votes. He sought re-election alongside five other candidates.
