The latest round of investigations of politicians by the Special Investigation Service (STT) is yet another signal that political parties in Lithuania are still not transparent, according to Vitalijus Gailius, the head of the Parliamentary Anticorruption Commission speaking on Žinių Radijas.

The politician and former law enforcement officer did not see a political motivation in the fact that probes of influential figures were usually initiated towards the end of the government‘s term and therefore not far out from the general election.

“And why they are usually directed at the ones who are ruling? This is probably because the corrupt decisions can be made only by those who are in power. We have to make the political environment as transparent as possible using all means,” Gailius said.

Ruslanas Golubovas, the STT representative told Žinių radijas that “our task, our expertise and our aim is to investigate corrupt offences, and it does not matter what party members commit these crimes.”

Order and Justice party chairman Rolandas Paksas, who is under investigation along with Lithuanian Morning newspaper shareholder and editor Gedvydas Vainauskas, claimed on Monday that the actions of law enforcement authorities violated democratic standards.
