At a meeting with Israel's President Reuven Rivlin, Butkevičius said that the opening of an Israeli Embassy in Vilnius earlier this year was a landmark event in relations between the two countries.

"Israel is our strategic regional partner and one of Lithuania's most important cooperation partners worldwide. I am convinced that the partnership between our countries will intensify in the future," the Lithuanian PM said in a press release.

Butkevičius highlighted the cooperation in the framework of the Lithuanian service in the United Nations Security Council and "the government's superb cooperation with the Lithuanian and world Jewish communities".

According to the press release, the prime minister briefed the participants of the meeting on the provisions of the Good Will Compensation Law and the performance of the commission for Jewish cultural and historical matters.

Under the 2011 law on compensation for nationalized property of Jewish religious communities, Lithuania has committed itself to paying 37 million euros in compensation over a decade.

The prime minister said that "Lithuania's government holds a strong stance on anti-Semitism, as well as implements tolerance promotion programs," reads the communiqué.

Earlier on Tuesday, Butkevičius paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust in the Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem.

During the visit at the Holocaust history museum, Butkevičius and his wife laid a wreath and planted a memorial tree.
