"I am pleased to welcome you in Lithuania and express my belief that, under your guidance, the relationships between our two countries will continue to grow. We highly appreciate the partnership with Japan, your country is becoming more and more visible here, with ever growing number of business contacts, tourist flows, various cultural projects," said the PM.

Recently, Lithuania paid tribute to prominent Japanese diplomat, Chiune Sugihara, who risked his and his family's lives during his service in Lithuania to issue "visas for life", which saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. A memorial plaque to remember the diplomat hangs on his former residence in Kaunas and Kaunas train station.

The PM and the ambassador discussed the common position of the two countries on many issues on the international scene and adherence to the same values, as well as good bilateral relations. "This allows us to develop and strengthen the bilateral political and economic cooperation. Lithuanian exports to Japan include agricultural products, medical equipment and lasers. Lithuanian linen is also gaining ground in your market. We can offer to Japan a wide range of transport and logistics services, and we would like to expand cooperation in the energy sector," said the prime minister.

Butkevičius thanked the ambassador for the support to Lithuania as regards its membership of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Toyoei Shigeeda is the tenth Japanese Ambassador to Lithuania and the third residing in Lithuania. The ambassador's priorities in Lithuania include economy, energy and security.
