Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says he will be looking for a replacement for Minister of Healthcare Juras Požela who has been in hospital for several weeks now.

Currently, the Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas is standing in for Požėla.

Butkevičius has stated that all of minister Požela‘s deputies are working at full capacity, with their work being coordinated by minister Olekas.

“There will be one change – by urgent decree there will be a change to the Law on Cabinet, because currently when a minister is ill, he can only be temporarily substituted and the substitute is not granted the right to sign certain documents,” Butkevičius told DELFI on Monday.

To deal with the issue, an amendment will be passed in the Seimas, according to Butkevičius. Moreover, a new minister will likely be assigned to temporarily substitute for Požela, relieving Defence Minister Olekas of additional duties.

Požėla has been in intensive care in the Santariškės clincs for about a month now. He was hospitalised following acute gastric disorder and stomach pains at the beginning of August. The hospital has said he has been diagnose with acute pancreatitis. The 34 year old healthcare minister fell ill during vacation.
