During a secret ballot on Tuesday, the proposed nomination was supported by 46 parliamentarians, 50 voted against and 19 abstained. Under the Constitution, the prosecutor general is appointed and dismissed by the president with approval from the parliament.

Meilutis, 40, has worked as a judge in courts of various levels, serving in leading positions for the past five years. He has been heading the Kaunas Regional Court since 2011.

The five-year term of the previous prosecutor general, Darius Valys, expired on June 15.

Appointment postponed indefinitely

After parliament refused to appoint Kaunas Regional Court Chairman Nerijus Meilutis as Lithuania's new prosecutor general, the designation is postponed indefinitely, President Dalia Grybauskaitė says.

"The ballot demonstrated the parliament's lax stance on problems of the prosecution system. The parliament sees more determined and well-performing leaders unacceptable. Appointment of the prosecutor general is now postponed indefinitely," Grybauskaitė said in a comment communicated to BNS by the President's Office.
