The Board of the Seimas of Lithuania has canceled a trip of three lawmakers to Taiwan to avoid angering China. The move follows Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius' recent meeting with his Chinese counterpart in Serbia.

"The prime minister met with the Chinese prime minister in Belgrade. And it seems there's a thaw over trade that stalled following Dalai Lama's visit. Any additional irritation creates conditions for the relations to be frozen again. We are talking about the opening of new markets. Either we're going to make use of it or not," Algirdas Susas, a Social Democratic member of the Board of the Lithuanian Seimas, told BNS.

On Wednesday, the Board gave the green light to the trip of Donatas Jankauskas, a member of the opposition Homeland Union, Liberal MP Algis Kašėta and Valerijus Simulik, a member of the non-affiliated group, to Taipei on 18-24 January. But the permission was cancelled on Friday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to comment on the parliament's decision, saying that the Lithuanian government sticks to the "one China" policy.
