Lithuania's Olympic discus champion Virgilijus Alekna has announced he will run for election to Lithuania’s parliament in the upcoming general elections.

Alekna will run for the Liberals for a Seimas seat in the Naujamiestis single-mandate constituency in Vilnius and will also be added to the opposition Liberal Union's list of candidates in the multi-mandate constituency.

It was previously reported that Alekna had intended to run for the Social Democrats in the general elections, or would not run at all.

The 44-year-old won two gold medals in the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics.
