"Russia's intervention in the territory of Ukraine has demonstrated a complete disregard for international law, democratic principles and values. It has also shown that economic sanctions imposed against Russia have been insufficient," MEP Mazuronis' letter read.
According to Mazuronis, there is no doubt that Moscow is not going to stop unless the international community reacts strictly to Russia's actions in Ukraine. Therefore, despite their geographic location, none of the European Union countries can feel safe.
"Let us prevent this war from spreading even more. I ask you to influence your governments, political leaders to take effective even if painful measures and maximise economic sanctions, to announce a complete embargo on Russia's military products without any exceptions and to provide all the needed assistance to Ukraine," the letter read.
According to the MEP, military intervention disguised under separatist army, armed with most advanced weapons, heavy artillery and anti-aircraft defence systems has been taking place for half a year. Crimea was annexed and civilians die in terrorist-controlled territories of eastern Ukraine, an airliner carrying people from all over the world was shot down. Europe cannot and must not turn a blind eye on this any longer.
