Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to her Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko, and wished peace and unity in defending their country.

"Twenty-three years ago, the people of Ukraine chose to build their state themselves. Today, they have to defend Ukraine and its independence," Grybauskaitė said in her message of congratulations, stating that Lithuanians understand very well the value of freedom and strongly support the determination of Ukrainian people to pursue the European path and to live in a free and democratic country.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius sent a message to Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

"Please accept my sincere wishes for strength to you and the people of Ukraine in defending fundamental democratic values, creation of a safe and peaceful future for Ukraine. The Lithuanian and Ukrainian nations share historic links, a common strife for independence that has become the basis of our strategic partnership. Lithuania supports Ukraine's determination to take the path of democracy, reforms and superiority of law, which is a sustainable and the most efficient way to create well-being for citizens," Butkevičius said in a press release.

Lithuania's Parliamentary Speaker Loreta Graužinienė sent a letter to members of Ukraine's Supreme Rada, expressing hope that Ukraine would successfully deter hostile forces aiming to destabilize the country.

Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius also joined the congratulations.
