Sergejus Muravjovas, the leader of the anti-corruption NGO Transparency International, has welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that legislators will ensure additional protection for individuals who report corruption or offences.

Under the proposed changes, institutions that receive information about corruption or offences of employees of the public sector would have to ensure protection of the reporting person's personal data. The changes also envisage ways of ensuring this during trials.

"If the proposed changes are approved and the amendments are adopted, it may reduce the possibility of engaging in corruption and boost the efficiency of counter-corruption efforts, therefore, it will definitely have a positive effect upon efforts against corruption, the crime rate and prevention of corruption," Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis said in a comment to BNS.
