Irmantas Jarukaitis, a judge from the Lithuanian Chief Administrative Court, has been appointed to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

He will assume the new duties on Oct. 7, Lithuania's National Court Administration said.

Jarukaitis has worked at the Lithuanian Chief Administrative Court since 2010, used to serve as its deputy chairman and acting chairman for two years.

Judges from each EU member state and 11 advocates general work at the Court of Justice of the European Union. The judges and advocates generals are appointed by common accord of the governments of the member states and hold office for a renewable term of six years.

The Court interprets EU law and ensures its equal application across all EU member states and EU institutions.
