Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius is leaving for Washington on Thursday to pay respects to Republican Senator John McCain who died last week.

The minister will attend farewell ceremonies at the Capitol and Washington National Cathedral, his spokeswoman Rasa Jakilaitienė told BNS Lithuania on Wednesday.

A Vietnam War veteran, McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81, succumbing to brain cancer. He worked in the Senate for more than 30 years.

The senator spoke in favor of the United States' additional security guarantees for Lithuania and other Baltic Sea countries and called for permanent deployment of American troops in Lithunia.
