If the task force set up by the prime minister fails to find a compromise on the draft National Minority Law prepared by the Culture Ministry, Lithuanian Culture Minister Šarūnas Birutis says its fate will depend on discussions on the line-up of the ruling coalition and the participation of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA) party in the bloc.

"We will wait for the coalition to be formed and there is more clarity about the participation of the Poles. They are among those with whom it is difficult to agree, and the government's programme contains certain provisions. After the political council, we will see what their stance is about the participation. Then we will see whether we will have to find compromise with or without them. This is the key issue now," Birutis told BNS on Monday.

He said there was yet no decision whether the project, which was headed by the then LLRA Culture Vice-Minister, Edvard Trusevič, would be shelved. At the same time, the minister added that the law may lose its relevance, if parliament manages to approve the MP-proposed amendments on national minority rights.
