The opposition Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (conservatives) will need run-off voting to elect its new chairperson. MEP Gabrielius Landsbergis came in a few dozen votes short of 50 percent of the vote in the first round of election this weekend.

The party's executive secretary Monika Navickienė told BNS Landsbergis secured 4,525 out of 9,090 votes, while his closest rival, Parliamentary Vice-Speaker Irena Degutienė, was supported by 3,913 voters.

Run-off voting is scheduled for 24-25 April.
