The ceremony was held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, at the headquarters of ASEAN. The organisation’s secretary general welcomed the first Lithuanian ambassador to the organization and invited Lithuania to cooperate actively with Southeast Asian countries both bilaterally and in the European Union and ASEAN dialogue framework.

“Today we open a new page of Lithuanian-ASEAN cooperation, and we hope that our country will become the gateway to the European market for your member countries,” said the Lithuanian ambassador.

Le Loung Minh emphasised the importance of economic relations, trade, and investment.

Meilūnas handed over an invitation from Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister Linas Linkevičius to the ASEAN secretary general to visit Lithuania.

The Foreign Minister met with Le Loung Minh last August in Jakarta, when it was agreed to start a more active Lithuanian-Southeast Asian dialogue.

The political and economic organization of Southeast Asian Nations was formed in 1967. It brings together 10 countries in the region, which is home to more than 625 million inhabitants.

ASEAN encourages economic growth, social progress, scientific and cultural fields, stability and peace in the region.
