"We are currently in the negotiating stage and there are no commitments. I will have an opportunity to meet with the German minister once again in Riga and we will have a conversation and then we'll be able to inform you," Juozas Olekas told journalists on Monday.

In his words, the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, where the Ukrainian army is fighting Russia-supported separatists, has highlighted the need for increased firepower.

Lithuania has upped its defence spending by a third this year and has bought anti-aircraft and anti-tank weaponry, is expanding trainings rages and is considering purchasing infantry fighting vehicles.

According to the Lithuanian defence minister, the army has also plans to acquire drones and plans to negotiate their purchase with Lithuanian producers as well.
