At the UN Security Council consultations on 22 August, Lithuanian Permanent Representative Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė condemned Russia's unilateral decision to bring the convoy of humanitarian aid into the territory of Ukraine without the latter's assent, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs.

"Russia's unilateral decision to bring the convoy of humanitarian aid into the territory of Ukraine without the latter's assent and without the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross escorting the convoy is a clear violation of international law. Such actions of Russia contradicts earlier agreements among Russia, Ukraine and the Red Cross," said the permanent representative of Lithuania.

Murmokaitė underlined that humanitarian aid must be provided according to the existing standards and principles of international humanitarian law; the issue of humanitarian aid shall not be used in seeking one's political or military goals. Lithuanian representative also expressed concerns about the continuous supply of Russia's armament to the separatist and the flow of foreign fighters to Eastern Ukraine.

Consultations of the UN Security Council were held on Lithuania's initiative in response to Russia's latest actions in Ukraine. During the sitting member states of the Security Council expressed great concern about Russia's unilateral decision to bring the convoy of humanitarian aid into the territory of Ukraine without the latter's assent and without the escort of the representatives of the Red Cross.
