Lithuania and Iran have failed to make full use of bilateral cooperation potential, says Lithuania's Social Democratic MP Algirdas Sysas who is leading a group of Lithuanian lawmakers currently in Iran.

"We cannot boast about great achievements in bilateral Lithuanian-Iranian relations either on the economic, cultural, or on the political level. Therefore, the establishment of the groups for inter-parliamentary relations in Lithuania and Iran has played an important role in stepping up our relations. Let us hope the Seimas delegation's first visit will play a positive role in Lithuanian-Iranian cooperation where we still have plenty of unused opportunities," Sysas was quoted as saying in a statement by the Seimas of Lithuania.

The group of Lithuanian lawmakers is visiting Iran on 9-12 August. On Sunday, they met with Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran Ali Larijani and talked about the start of bilateral relations, including the signature of a treaty on bilateral friendship in 1930, and their resumption after Lithuania restored independence.

The Lithuanian lawmakers also met with Iranian co-chairman of the parliamentary friendship group Vahid Ahmadi, chairman of the Iranian parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi, and paid a visit to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lithuania and the then Persian Empire established diplomatic relations in 1930 when a treaty on bilateral friendship was signed. It was confirmed by Iran in 1991 as still in force.
