Lieutenant Colonel Eugenijus Lastauskas has taken over as head of the Strategic Communication Department of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The 42-year-old officer replaced Colonel Darius Petryla on Monday, Captain Gintautas Ciunis, a spokesman for Lithuanian Armed Forces, has told BNS.

Lastauskas started his military service in 1995. His has served as a reconnaissance officer in various units of the Armed Forces and, most recently, as the commander of the Duke Vaidotas Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Rukla.

Lastauskas has participated in international operations in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Strategic Communication Department coordinates cooperation between military units and the public, organizes the provision of information about the Armed Forces to the public, analyzes the information environment and information operations by unfriendly foreign countries, and takes steps to build up the resilience of the military and the public to hostile information.
