The Lithuanian Pig Breeders Association (LKAA) said lax state control of pig producers and indecisiveness by the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Food and Veterinary Service was leading to more cases of African swine fever.

LKAA representatives argue that Lithuania is still very unsafe as many pig producers do not comply with biosecurity guidelines and most of them are small farmers raising up to five pigs. Currently large pig farmers in Lithuania manage 600,000 pigs while small farmers have 62,000 pigs.

The Lithuanian Pig Breeders Association representatives are worried because in the last ten days even four cases of African swine fever were recorded in Lithuania.

During the whole of 2015 only 13 cases of African swine fever were detected with 54 pigs were killed.
